Visit your MP

From a volunteer who had a meeting with their MP:

“I was a bit nervous about the meeting but I needn't have been as she was very friendly and welcoming (they are just people, after all).  I made sure I mentioned the economic aspects as well as the animal welfare issues and she seemed very receptive and interested.  By the end of the meeting she assured me she would watch the video that I left with her and that she would write to Joe Ludwig, the Minister for Agriculture.  She was quite surprised by the percentage of people who are against live export and also by the numbers on the petitions”

Write a letter to the editor

Monitor the newspapers for live export stories and respond with a letter to the editor.  The Letter to the Editor section is one of the most read parts of a newspaper.

Animal Welfare Unit – Get Active

The Animal Welfare Unit in WA desperately needs funding so additional inspectors can be appointed.  There is only one inspector (there were previously 6 inspectors) to cover the entire State of WA.

This Unit needs more resources to be able to monitor saleyards, markets and live exports.  Currently, monitoring and reporting of breaches to laws at the loading of live export vessels is being done by not for profit groups and concerned individuals.

Write to Premier Barnett and ask him to provide more funding for the Animal Welfare Unit immediately.

You may get a response saying that there are 200 inspectors appointed under the Animal Welfare Act in WA.  Please note:

• The Animal Welfare Unit no longer conducts routine inspections because of a lack of inspectors (due to lack of funding by the WA Liberal Government)

• Whilst Rangers are authorised under the Act, they are not resourced or mandated to conduct inspections of live export feedlots or saleyards

• The Department of Agriculture Inspectors only play an education role only and don’t get involved in enforcement
